How To Decorate A Room With Large Abstract Art

With some basic understanding you can have a lot of fun picking out the perfect abstract art that will transform any room.  Figuring out which type of abstract art that you like is probably the easiest part.  Because when if comes to large abstract art, the feeling you get right away is just about all you need to go with.  Then you will want to understand just exactly where the art will be hung.  And more specifically the relationship of size, color, and form that exists in the art and the room.   When done right, you can essentially amplify the beauty and elegance in the art as well as the room.   And don’t worry, to make your room beautiful you don’t need to buy an original painting.  Framed gallery wrapped canvas prints are a lovely modern option instead.

Size

Abstract art is special because it has the ability to enter the senses on an emotional level.  So you want the abstract art big enough to envelop you so that you can experience it. That usually means 4-6’ in width or height depending on the size of the room.  And that means you are hanging something that will become a focal point in the room.  As such, you will need a good location that is open and possibly framed in by furniture or windows.  This could be above a mantle, over a couch, between the chairs, etc.  You will want to measure your wall space and temporarily mark the wall with tape to help gain a better understanding before you buy.

Color

Color is such an important part of abstract art.  Neutral grays and washed out rooms are the easiest to add art to.  These types of rooms drastically change with a large colorful piece.   Then, by simply adding small decor items with the matching color you develop a greater richness and cohesiveness.  And the opposite is true.  A very colorful or busy room might only need a simple piece of art that has a lot of grey or white and only a small amount of color that matches something in the room.  And if your room has more of a muted variety of colors you have to consider how those colors interact with the colors in the artwork. First take a look at the main colors in the room and try to match some of the colors within the art.  For example, if your walls and curtains have blue tones perhaps the artwork should have some blue tones.

Form

Texture and forms are also very important.  Some artwork has qualities similar to certain fabrics and materials such as wood, glass, or metal.  If does well to try to match some of the qualities or balance them.   For example, a visually textured artwork works better when objects in the rooms are similarly textured such as a knitted throw blanket or fuzzy pillows.  Smooth flowing imagery works well with smooth flowing decor items such as soft shimmering curtains or glass tabletops. If the artwork has floral objects in it, you may want to consider plant life in the space as well.  If your lamp is gold or your furniture has gold legs, perhaps a gold frame around the painting would look nice.  Also, if you are hanging a modern gallery wrapped canvas art that is without a traditional frame, inlay or panelling on the wall itself can be used to add more compelling design to frame the art.

If you take some these three things into consideration when you decorate your room with large abstract art, you will find greater cohesiveness and be very happy with the harmony and beauty in your space for many years to come.
